The goal of Lasik is to allow you to see without needing glasses or contact lenses. LASIK surgery is a common surgical procedure to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Using the excimer laser, or cold laser, the doctor then begins the process of reshaping the cornea Reshaping the cornea affects the way that light enters the eye, similar to the way that glasses correct vision
Advantages of LASIK include:
- Quicker healing time
- Many patients have rapid visual recovery
- Our patients have less risk of scarring
- Much less risk of corneal haze
- Much less post-op discomfort
- Wide range of refractive errors can be treated
LASIK Procedure
During the LASIK operation, a small flap is made on the surface of the cornea. A suction ring will hold the eye in place. A ring is used to apply suction to the eye and your eye surgeon will use an instrument to cut the outer layer of the eye. You will not see anything or feel any pain, but you may feel some pressure at this time. The laser uses precise technology to remove tissue while preserving the surrounding tissue of the cornea. When the flap is turned over, your vision will become a little blurry. You will be asked to fixate on a red target light. This portion of the procedure takes about 20-60 seconds.
When the flap is placed back into position and the eye surgeon will wait about 3-5 minutes for your eye to create a natural seal to hold the flap down. The typical LASIK procedure takes about 10 minutes per eye. After the procedure, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops are given. Sometimes we suggest protective goggles to prevent scratching the eyes at night during sleep.
