Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome is a very common problem with our eyes. Over ten million people suffer from dry eyes. It’s cause is usually by a problem with the quality of the tear film that lubricates the eyes. Symptoms range from constant irritation to inflammation of the anterior (front) tissues of the eye. Some causes are obvious like living in a dry climates or the use of certain medications. Others are less obvious, like staring at a computer all day and not blinking. Dry eyes are more common in women, especially after menopause. In more serious aspects, dry eyes can indicate systemic diseases. Dry eye syndrome may not be cured, but often the scratchiness and burning can be managed.

Practice some practical lifestyle changes that can significantly improve irritation from dry eyes. Drink more water like eight to ten glasses each day keeps the body hydrated and flushes impurities. Force yourself to blink frequently – especially when reading or watching television.

Treating dry eye problems is important not only for comfort, but also for the health of the cornea. Treatments may include topical lubrication with drops, gels and ointments. It may help to plug up the duct that drains the tears from your eye with soft semi-permanent silicone plugs.
